PalmCon Unites Comic Lovers and Local Artists in West Palm Beach

Cosplayers, comic lovers and local artists united at PalmCon last weekend at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. PalmCon, an annual event, is a comic book and collectibles show. Popular actors from comic culture attend, and many guests even dress up in “cosplay,” which are costumes of their favorite characters.

Some of the actors who attended were Michael Bell, Jesse Jensen and Walter Jones. Additionally, Palm Beach Atlantic’s own Dr. Alex Wainer spoke on a panel at the event.

A wide variety of people attended last weekend’s event. It is especially popular for local artists to showcase their artwork pertaining to comics. Masks, pottery and posters are just some of the artwork attendees can see.

Local artist Eric Olson has been making pottery based off of UFOs for over 20 years.

“I made a pot that I liked, like a UFO by accident and that's how it started,” Olson said.  “I refined it to include robots, some from pop culture.”

Olson started going to comic conventions last year after attending Miami Supercon last July.  He is passionate about his artwork, noting his favorite piece, The Miracle Man.

Other artists to attend included Gary Niles, a pop art artist from Fort Lauderdale.  He has worked as an artist for about four years, specializing in 80s horror and miscellaneous pop culture.

PalmCon continues on as a massive community event for local comic stores, cosplayers, artists and pure comic lovers. PBA students interested in the event can check www.palmcon.net for upcoming info about next year’s convention.
